your favorite artist is just scrolling...

Imogen heap, Old Navy Club, and the BEST Youtube tutorials!

Poetmistry: now approved by Imogen Heap

So Imogen Heap commented on my video about Blawan recently!! I attach this photo not to flex (okay a little bit to flex), but as a reminder that YOUR favorite artist is also just scrolling!! ~Sadly, in this hellscape we live in, we’re all just scrolling~ The reason I bring this up, though, is because it often feels like the “real, cool artists” are sort of above all this social media non-sense. They just get to make art and stylish videos and drop mysterious links on their hidden Soundcloud that somehow fans have uncovered…right? That’s what we see at the high level, but I think we forget that on a day to day they are also engaged in some of the same menial crap that we’re told we need to do if we want to “make it.” It’s not to say there aren’t big differences between me and someone on a major label, but realizing my favorite artist is also just scrolling makes me feel a little less cringe about all the “content” I’m trying to get out there. Idk, perhaps in another life, I’ll be an elusive underground legend who develops a cult following from their 24hr-only drops on Soulseek!

Anyway, it’s been a while since you’ve received a message from good ol’ poetmistry, so I have lots to share. The first is that my favorite label Nightcore4TotalSluts finally coaxed me into doing a new virginmistry project: MADONNA/SLUT COMPLEX. I’ve really made my own dreams come true by finally finding a way to remix what my friend calls “songs you’d hear with your mom at Old Navy in 2003.” Yes, I’m talking Michelle Branch’s “Everywhere,” Ashlee Simpson’s “Pieces of Me,” Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Want to Wait,” and Liz Phair’s “Why Can’t I” all remixed into one ridiculous banger (if you don't recognize those titles, you will when you hear the song). I kept this romp through the 2000s going by trying to do a “Bar Mitzvahs in 2008” songs and another one diving into some pop punk classics! They are truly absurd (and I don’t use that word lightly), but they really put a smile on face and I'll hope you’ll bang them in the gym. Later this week, I’m going to try to do a twitch stream where we dive into these project files so keep an eye on my IG story for that!

Also, if you haven’t noticed already, I’ve been making YouTube videos! There’s so much that gets skipped over in my short form tutorials, so I’ve really been enjoying getting into some production minutiae. Even if you’re familiar with the main ideas, I think there will definitely be some little sidebars where you’ll discover some new tips and tricks. I’m also trying to keep the videos loose and conversational so they’re fun to watch and give a general sense of my process. Here’s the latest one on FKA twigs!

Thanks for reading this far if you’ve made it down here! A ton of projects of mine have finished up in the last two weeks (including my album!!!), so lots of fun updates coming soon! Also, I’m still figuring out what exactly to put in these newsletters, so feel free to dm me somewhere online if you have any opinions about what you’d like to see here.
